1. Start by cleaning the seal counter surface on the shaft, filing down any burrs or rough spots.
2. Measure the diameter of an unworn portion of the shaft in three different positions and calculate the average. If the mean diameter falls within the recommended specifications for a specific sleeve size, the sleeve will have a sufficient press fit to prevent it from sliding or spinning without the need for adhesive.
3. Determine the exact position where the sleeve needs to be placed to cover the seal wear track, and mark the surface accordingly.
4. For shallow wear grooves, no filling is required. However, you can optionally apply a light layer of a non-hardening sealant, such as Loctite 209, to the inside diameter surface of the sleeve, but be sure to clean away any excess that may migrate to the shaft or sleeve outside diameter.
5. If the shaft is deeply scored, fill the groove with a powdered metal epoxy-type filler before installing the sleeve, allowing the sleeve to wipe off any excess filler.
6. The flange end of the sleeve should go on the shaft first, and then place the installation tool over the sleeve.
7. Gently tap the center of the installation tool until the sleeve covers the seal worn surface. If the installation tool is too short, you can use a length of pipe or tubing with a squared-off, burr-free end, as long as the inside diameter matches the installation tool.
8. If the flange needs to be removed due to clearance issues, cut it perpendicular to the tear-off groove using a metal shear, and then bend and twist the flange to break it off along the groove.
9. After the sleeve is installed, check again for any remaining burrs that could potentially damage the seal.
10. Lubricate the sleeve with the system medium before installing the seal.
11. Proceed with the seal installation.
